Jackie Jumped

Musically this song is what it always was from conception. Lyrically, it went through a half-dozen iterations before I settled on this final version. And that's only because I had studio time booked and had to nail it down.

It's the first song in a stretch that deals with death, however, in this case not the death of a loved one. No, this song is about the biggest bullshitter I ever came across in my life and how he fell to pieces in front of me when his organs began to give way. Not pleasant.  But when compared to other people in my life who have passed away, hard-working honest people like my parents, my in-laws, my aunts and uncles, and, yes, in particular my daughter, there's something to be said for how they left this world graciously and at peace whereas this other gentleman, who never met a lie he wouldn't tell, cowered like a cornered mouse. Disturbing. But if that's not a topic for a song what is?

Lyrics

Song and lyrics by Richard Lehmann (ASCAP)

Jackie jumped when he heard the reaper calling
Way too soon and way too meddlesome
The reaper growled “now Jack you quit your stalling”
He gave a laugh and down he turned his thumb

Chorus:

I’ll make it crystal clear
I want you out of here
You squandered your best years
Come with me now

I’ll make it crystal clear
I’m takin’ you out of here
You burned up your last years
Let’s go, let’s get out now

Verse:

Fables were part of Jackie’s stories
In the end liars often find a way
He’d throw a punch keep up his guard and counter
Jackie tried to book extended stay

Chorus

It’s his day to be moved
Now even Jackie knows he is screwed
Like any coward he’s come unglued
Life’s not so pretty

It’s come the day when he’s to move
Now even Jackie Jackie knows he is screwed
He prays his eternal truth
Is much more pretty

Bridge:

He must have known that he was lying from the very start
Inside the box where there’s forgiveness, but no light

Verse:

Fool us once it’s our fault goes the story
So many faults, so many foolish days
You live a myth and hope there’s time to come clean
It’s Jackie’s time to pay and pay and pay

Chorus:

No he couldn’t take us down
Just like the other clowns
Trees fall and make no sound
If no one cares to listen

No he couldn’t take us down
Just like the other clowns
Trees fall and make no sound
If no one cares to listen

Bridge:

He never took our calls, said ‘hi’ to us or how’s your day
He left us hanging there and turned his back the other way
When we came knocking with our hands out and our blistered palms
He turned away because the truth burned in his eyes

Chorus to end

And so life motors on
Here comes another dawn
Who’s turn now to be gone
Will he be a hero

Will truth survive and thrive
Or barely stay alive
1, 2, 3, 4 or 5
Who’ll be your hero

Who’ll make it crystal clear
Who wants you out of here
Who’s taking your best years
Tell them to get out now

Who’ll make it crystal clear
Who wants you out of here
Who’s taking your best years
Tell them to get out now

Yay a yah yah….
